Details
The Cintiq 21UX was a longstanding Creative Pen Display that came in 2 generations. The first generation, model DTZ2100 was initially released in 2005 and was produced until 2010. The second generation, model DTK2100 was produced from 2010 to 2012. Both displays shared the same footprint, LCD, and stand, but the latter model utilized improved pen components (Intuos4 technology vs Intuos3 technology) as well as additional ExpressKeys. This page will include documentation for both models of the Cintiq 21UX as it provides support a central landing spot when a customer says they have a "Cintiq 21UX".
Successor
The Cintiq 21UX was succeeded by the Cintiq 22HD which was produced from 2012 to 2018. At that point the current pen display in this form-factor would be considered the as this is the current professional pen display (as of April, 2020). Some would consider the Wacom Cintiq 22 to be also considered a successor to the Cintiq 21UX, but it is important to note that the Wacom Cintiq 22 is not considered a professional pen display.

Troubleshooting
DVI-I Cable
Both models of the Cintiq 21UX have a 3-in-1 cable which contains a DVI-I connection for the display interface. This cable is not user-replaceable. DVI-I was used as it will allow for adaptability to Digital or Analog host computers. This also means that the included connection may have more pins than some graphics cards are setup to handle. If a graphics card is truly DVI-D (or an adapter to another digital connection type), then it will lack several pin holes on the connection. If connected, this will damage the pins on the Cintiq cable as they will have nowhere to go. This is why a DVI-I to DVI-D adapter was included in the box, essentially removing these pins from the equation. In some cases, graphics cards may have a port which allows for a DVI-I connection without damage, but the card may not understand the communication with a DVI-I cable. We have seen users be successful incorporating the DVI-D adapter in these situations (thus simplifying the information to the card).
DVI-I vs all others
Both models of the Cintiq 21UX have a switch on the upper-right (near the on-screen controls) which tells the display if we are using a Digital (DVI) or Analog (VGA) connection. In most situations it seems the position of this switch doesn't matter. In some however it does. If a customer is seeing a 'no display' issue it can be helpful to try switching this to the opposite position and then power-cycling the display.
Status light
Both models of the Cintiq 21UX have a status light near the power button on the center-top of the display. This light should illuminate whenever a pen is making contact with the display. This is a hardware light, meaning the status of the driver often doesn't matter. It should still illuminate when the tablet hardware sees a compatible pen in-contact with the display.
